Biography of the Speakers

 

Jehangir Karamat, Ambassador Designate to United States

Mr. Jehangir Karamat assumed his current post of Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States in November, 2004.

Ambassador Jehangir Karamat retired as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff and Chief of Army Staff in October 1998. His senior level assignments included serving the roles of Director General Military Operations and Chief of General Staff.

Ambassador Karamat has been Colonel Commandment and Colonel in Chief for the Pakistan Armoured Corps. He has also commanded troops in Saudi Arabia.

Ambassador Karamat has been a Visiting Fellow at CISAC, Stanford University and Washington D.C.’s Brookings Institute. In addition, he was part of the United Nations’ study on Afghanistan and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.

Ambassador Karamat is a graduate of National Defense College, the Command and Staff College, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He also holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations.

 

Mohammad Sadiq Deputy Chief of Mission

Mohammad Sadiq joined the Embassy of Pakistan, Washington D.C. as Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission in August 2002.

In his diplomatic postings, Mr. Sadiq had served as Political Counsellor in Beijing (1998-2000), Brussels (1994-1998), and as Second Secretary in Belgrade (1984-1988)

At the Foreign Office, Mr. Sadiq held the positions of Director for Kashmir Affairs (2001-2002), Commonwealth of Independent States (1993-1994), and administration (1989-1990)

He has also represented Pakistan in several multilateral and bilateral conferences and meetings abroad, and was member of the UN Election Observer Team that oversaw the elections in South Africa which ended the Apartheid regime.

Mohammad Sadiq has been a guest speaker on foreign affairs-related topics, ranging from human rights issues/policy to peace and security issues in South Asia, US-Pakistan bilateral relations, and economic development of Pakistan at the University Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels); National Institute of Public Administration (Peshawar); Foreign Service Academy (Islamabad); National Defense University (Washington, D.C.); Foreign Service Institute of US State Department; American University (School of International Service); and John Hopkins University (School of Advance International Studies) Washington, D.C.

Mohammad Sadiq holds two Masters Degrees, in Political Science and International Affairs respectively from University of Peshawar, Pakistan (1980) and Columbia University, New York (1992).

 

Shahid Javed Burki, Former Finance Minister of Pakistan

Shahid Javed Burki's career at the World Bank began in 1974 with appointment as senior economist of the Policy Planning and Program Review Department. In 1982 he was appointed Director of the International Relations Department, and later served as Director of the China Department. He served as Finance and Planning Minister of the Pakistan for 2 years. Burki was a member of the care-taker government that took office following the dismissal of Ms. Bhutto; he was in charge of the portfolios of finance, planning and economic affairs. Mr. Burki has since re-joined the World Bank as vice-president of the Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Office. Burki has written extensively on the political economy of both China and Pakistan. Burki was educated at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and at Harvard University as a Mason Fellow.

 

Bapsi Sidhwa,

Acclaimed Author of the Crow Eaters, The Bride, and other works Distinguished international writer Bapsi Sidhwa has published four novels: An American Brat, Cracking India, The Bride and The Crow Eaters.

Her works have been translated into several European and Asian languages. Among her many honors Sidhwa has received the Bunting Fellowship at Radcliffe/Harvard, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writer's Award, the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan's highest national honor in the arts, and the LiBeraturepreis in Germany.

Sidhwa, who was on the advisory committee to Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on Women's Development and taught at Columbia University, University of Houston, Mount Holyoke College, and Brandeis University. Cracking India (a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Quality Paperback Book Club selection), was made into the film Earth by Canadian director Deepa Mehta. Sidhwa's play, Sock 'em With Honey, based on An American Brat, opened at Leicester Haymarket and played in London in April 2003.

 

Akbar Ahmed

Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies Akbar Ahmed is the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies and professor of International Relations at American University in Washington D.C.

He is a distinguished anthropologist, writer, and filmmaker. Dr. Ahmed is a regular syndicated columnist for Religion News Service. In addition, he has been actively involved in interfaith dialogue and the study of global Islam and its impact on contemporary society.

His works include Discovering Islam: Making Sense of Muslim History and Society, Postmodernism and Islam: Predicament and Promise, Jinnah Quartet, Islam Today: A Short Introduction to the Muslim World, Islam Under Seige: Living Dangerously in a Post-Honor World, Resistance and Control in Pakistan, and Postmodernism and Islam. His works have won international acclaim, including nomination for the Amalfi Award, rating as among the best non-fiction books by the Los Angeles Times, and subject of the award-winning "Dialogue" series at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

In addition, Dr. Ahmed has delivered keynote addresses to prestigious organizations such as Congressional retreats, National Defense University, Foreign Service Institute, and the State Department. In addition, Dr. Ahmed has made media appearances in both the U.K. and the U.S. with CNN, MSNBC, PBS's "Think Tank", NBC Nightly News, NPR and BBC.

 

Shahid Husain

Shahid Husain, Advisor on Finance to Government of Pakistan Shahid Husain is currently a member of the Board of Prime Bank, owned by Saudi and Pakistani investors.

Mr. Husain has served in the World Bank for 33 years, in which he acted as Vice President and Senior Vice President. In addition, he has managed vice presidencies for East Africa, East Asia and Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean.

His areas of expertise include rural development, family planning and agricultural research in Africa, Induction of China into the World Bank and early work on its economic reform and liberalization, structural adjustment and resolution of debt crisis in Latin America and consolidation of the Banks internal management at tumultuous times.

 

Mowahid Hussain Shah

Mowahid Hussain Shah, Special Assistant to Chief Minister of Punjab Mowahid H. Shah is an attorney-at-law, author, and political analyst. In addition to being an editor of the Eastern Times, Mr. Shah has served as Vice President of the Foreign Correspondents Association of
the United States.

His works have been published in The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Post, Worldview, Middle East Insight, Herald, Nawa-i-Waqt, and Pakistan Link. As a result, Mr. Shah has served as a political commentator on television and radio on C-Span, CNN, BBC, Fox, VOA, and NBC. Furthermore, he has been a frequent lecturer at the U.S. State Department's Foreign Service Institute, American institutions, Command and Staff College (Quetta, Pakistan), National Defense College (Rawalpindi, Pakistan), and the Lahore High Court Bar.

He has been a law partner to U.S. Senator James G. Abourrezk and participation with the Lahore High Court Bar, District of Columbia Bar, and the United States Supreme Court Bar. Mr. Shah is well known for his active stances on Muslim issues with a specialization in Kashmir, Palestine, and Bosnia. Mr. Shah's educational background includes a B.A. and LL.B. from Punjab University, and LL.M. from the National Law Center, George Washington University.

 

Nasim Ansari

Nasim Ansari, Kalamazoo County Commissioner Nasim Ansari is the first Pakistani American in Michigan to hold an elected office. Serving on the Portage City Council gave him the framework to move forward to Kalamazoo County Commissioner. Currently, he works on the Parks and Recreation Commission, Convention and Visitation Bureau Board of Directors, Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors, and Intergovernmental Cooperation/Community Collaboration Committee.

In addition, he holds the position of President U.S. Association of Michigan, an affiliate of Pakistan American Congress. In the past, he has served on the Kalamazoo County Environmental Health Advisory Council and Portage Groundwater Commission. His educational background includes a Masters in Chemistry and Business Administration, and a Diploma in Public Administration.

 

Dr. Raza Bokhari, MD, MBA

Dr. Raza Bokhari, is an entrepreneurial physician. Currently, he serves as High Complexity Clinical Clinical Laboratory Director. His educational background at Temple University with a Masters in Business Administration and University of Punjab with a Doctor of Medicine helped set him up for the "Entrepreneur in residence" (2001-2002) nomination from Temple University Fox School of Business and Management. In addition, Philadelphia Business Journal named Parkway Clinical Laboratories as one of the top three, small businesses to work in the greater Philadelphia area (October 2004).

Dr. Bokhari began his entrepreneurial and medical career in 1991 as a House Surgeon at Holy Family Hospital. He served as Associate Director for Alia Laboratories (1993-1997), Laboratory Director for Princeton Biomedical Laboratories (1997-2003), and President & CEO for Parkway Clinical Laboratories (2003-present). In addition, Dr. Bokhari also served as President & CEO for Lakewood Pathology Associates(2000-present).

 

Tariq M. Khan

Tariq M. Khan, President, Association of Pakistani Scientists and Engineers of North America (APSENA) Currently, Tariq Khan is a registered professional engineer in both Maryland and Virginia; His work experience in the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government , defense and commercial nuclear industry, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Baltimore Gas and Electric Company at its Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant set up the framework for his position as the Director of Engineering with a Congressional agency in Washington D.C. Furthermore, his education at Virginia Tech where he received a B.S.M.E, and his M.B.A. from Loyola College provided him with the assets required to become the President of Pakistan Forum, a philanthropic and social organization.


Amina Khan

Amina Khan, Political Activist & Attorney Amina Khan is currently Director at the McLean Furniture Gallery, and involved with various political and interfaith causes such as the Virginia State Bar, the Capital Speakers Club, and others. Amina Khan was born in Pakistan, and immigrated to the U.S. with her family in 1984. Her education at Georgetown University, Delaware Law School, and Georgetown University Law Center with an LLM in International & Comparative Law prepared her for the beginning of her political career. Amina served as a political appointee under President Clinton's second term of office, at the U.S. Department of Energy. As a Senior Policy Advisor at the Nuclear National Security Administration, Amina worked with the U.S. national nuclear programs as well as with the U.S. Congress. After leaving government, Amina was a Project Manager with a government consulting firm for two years.

 

Nayyera Haq, Press Advisor


Nayyera Haq currently serves as a Press Advisor to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, focusing on regional press and coordinating media plans with the Democratic Members of Congress. Nayyera began her tenure in politics as an intern with then Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt and continued on to work on several aspects of Democratic campaigns, including press and voter turnout efforts on Congressional races. Nayyera is a native of New York and has a Bachelor's degree in History and Economics from University of Michigan.


Assad Akhter, Legislative Assistant


Assad Akhter is currently a Legislative Assistant for US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. He covers a number of issues for the Congresswoman including foreign policy, defense, budget and transportation issues. In addition, he is the lead staffer for the Congresswoman in her role as Co-Chair of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus. Prior to his work with Congresswoman Jackson Lee he worked for Congressman David Bonior as a Legislative Fellow. He graduated in 2003 with a Bachelors degree in International Relations from the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University.

 

Umair Khan, Muslims for Kerry


Umair Khan was the 2003-2004 Frank Horton Fellow in the office of Congressman Michael M. Honda where he worked on issue areas related to Civil Rights, Immigration, Veterans, and Economic Development. Mr. Khan is a graduate of Cornell University, with a B.A. degree in Government and Near Eastern Studies. Mr. Khan's leadership activities included being a student elected member of the University Assembly as well as a columnist for the acclaimed Cornell Daily Sun, under the moniker "More than Two Cents." On the political front, Mr. Khan has volunteered with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, traveling to both Kentucky and South Dakota for the special election held in each respective state.

 

Akir Saeed Khan, Muslims for Bush

Akir has worked in successful campaigns with Judge Eric Levinson for the North Carolina Court of Appeals and Patrick McCrory for Mayor of Charlotte. Recently, he was an intern for the College Republican National Committee and, in October of this year, he was asked to serve as a Marshall for the Bush/Cheney campaign in Pennsylvania. In addition, Akir Khan had editorials published in Pakistan Link Newspaper, Arab-American News, Muslim Observer, US News and World Report and an online Arabic journal in New Jersey. He also appeared as a guest on the WB Network in an "I Vote" forum and on the Islamic Broadcast Network. He is currently studying Marketing and Operations Management at University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
