Rice's Call on the President
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called on the President General Pervez Musharraf this morning. During the meeting, they reviewed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest.
Secretary Rice thanked President Musharraf for Pakistan’s assistance for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
President Musharraf expressed satisfaction over the growing multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and the United States. He appreciated US assistance and stressed the importance of enhancing bilateral trade. He underlined the need for greater market access for Pakistani products in the US market and early conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement. The President said that economic development and creation of employment opportunities would help to curb extremism.
Secretary Rice stated that both countries enjoyed an excellent relationship. She reaffirmed US commitment to broaden and deepen the strategic relationship between the two countries.
Stressing the importance of strengthening the commercial and economic relationship with Pakistan, Secretary Rice recognized the importance that trade and investment could play in Pakistan’s economic development.
The President briefed Secretary Rice on the peace process with India. He emphasized the need to maintain the momentum of the peace process aimed at resolving outstanding issues including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. He urged the US government to extend its support in moving forward on Kashmir. Secretary Rice praised the President for promoting peace and stability in South Asia. She stated that the US would continue to support progress in the Pakistan-India peace process. She also affirmed US support for the settlement of all outstanding issues including Kashmir dispute.
Secretary Rice appreciated Pakistan-US cooperation in countering terrorism. She praised Pakistan for its contribution in the stabilization and reconstruction of Afghanistan.
President was assisted by Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri and senior officials. Secretary Rice was accompanied by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns, and senior Administration’s officials.
