President Musharraf's visit to the United States(September 16-27, 2006)
Senior US officials including Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, and Secretary of Energy, Samuel Bodman, called on the President. President Musharraf addressed US policy influentials at an event organized by Nixon Center in New York and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC . Both the President and the First Lady addressed a large gathering of students at George Washington University . The President also met with Congressional leaders at a luncheon on Capitol Hill sponsored by Congressmen Tom Lantos and Henry Hyde. To honor and recognize the US organizations and companies which made invaluable contributions to the earthquake relief efforts in Pakistan, an investiture ceremony was held at the Embassy Chancery, where the President gave awards to US government functionaries, corporate sector contributors as well as NGOs. President Musharraf also addressed the community of Pakistanis and Pakistani-Americans both in Washington DC and New York . The President's other engagements during the visit included meetings with US investors/businessmen including important CEO's, bankers, and investors. A luncheon meeting was hosted in honor of the President by US Chamber and US-Pakistan Business Council in New York . He also met with a wide cross section of the US media. The visit was successful in achieving all its objectives. The President discussed with his interlocutors a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues. He highlighted the dramatic turn around of Pakistan 's economy and the progress attained in other diverse fields. The First Lady's programme included a visit to Bronx Zoo in New York where she witnessed the display of the snow leopard “Leo”, brought from Pakistan for conservation purposes. Leo would return to Pakistan after necessary conservation arrangements are made there in collaboration with the US. In Washington DC, the First Lady inaugurated, along with First Lady Laura Bush, a website on Pakistani art and culture that has been developed in collaboration with the Kennedy Center.
