The Embassy observes“Youm-e-Istaqamat” on the first anniversary of the October 8, 2005 earthquake

A solemn ceremony was held at the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington DC to observe “Youm-e-Istaqamat” on the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck the northern part of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir on October 8, 2005, killing more than 80,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless. About 200 people, comprising members of the Pakistani community, representatives of US relief agencies, NGOs and the media attended the event.

A moment of silence was observed in remembrance of those who lost their lives. A documentary depicting the different dimensions of the devastation caused by the worst-ever natural disaster in Pakistan 's history was shown.

The Ambassador, in his address, reminded the audience of the scale of the disaster and applauded the efforts of the government and people of Pakistan , and the community of Pakistani Americans, in coming to the rescue of those affected. He emphasized the need for continuing support and help in the daunting task of reconstruction.
