Ambassador Haqqani emphasizes Pakistan-US strategic partnership

Highlighting mutuality of interests between Pakistan and the United States, Islamabad's envoy in Washington has voiced the confidence that the two nations would forge a long-term strategic partnership. Ambassador Husain Haqqani was speaking at a dinner he hosted in honor of a visiting delegation of Pakistani members of parliament at the country's embassy on Tuesday.
"Pakistan has been an important partner in security of the United States while the United States remains a crucial ally in Pakistan's development and security," he told a gathering that included senior American officials, a group of visiting Pakistani journalists and prominent Pakistani-Americans.
Haqqani felt that both nations wanted to bridge differences and end ups and downs in the bilateral relations, witnessed over the past several decades.
The two countries, he said, want to build a strategic partnership which takes care of the interests of people of both nations.
"For the first time the U.S. leaders desire to deepen the relationship with Pakistan, and make it a relationship that goes beyond immediate concerns of the day and goes down to the people's level," he remarked.

The envoy said the Kerry-Lugar Act - which will every year allocate $ 1.5 billion in civilian assistance for Pakistanin fileds like education, healthcare and infrastructure - reflects Washington's resolve to have a sustained partnership with Pakistan.
In the context of ongoing fight against militancy, Haqqani said Pakistan and the United States are working together to put the militants out of business.
He referred to Pakistan's recent successes and noted that Pakistan and the United States remain partners in eliminating terrorists so that they do not pose threat to the Pakistanis as well as the Americans.
The Pakistani members of the parliament visiting Washington at the invitation of Sate Department include Minister for Health Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Senator Abbas Afridi, Senator Hafiz Rasheed Ahmed, MNA Syed Akhunzada Chitan, MNA Ms Asiya Nasir, MNA Noor Alam Khan, MNA Sajid Husain Turi, MNA Jawad Hussain, MNA Mohammad Kamran Khan, MNA Sufyan Yusuf, MNA Nadeem Afzal Gondal and MPA Dr Haider Ali Khan.
