Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman Meets Embassy Interns
Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, the owner of the Jang group and the GEO TV channel, met with the Embassy interns yesterday evening. Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman was introduced by DCM Mohammad Sadiq.
Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman discussed the setup of the media empire by his father in 1939. At present, the Jang group consists of the largest-selling Urdu newspaper in Pakistan, Jang, its English counterpart, The News, as well as various magazines, radio channels and a TV channel, GEO.
The interns and Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman exchanged views on the state of the Pakistani media, the projection of Western culture on channels such as GEO and coverage of social issues like domestic violence. On Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman’s request, the interns underscored the issues faced by Pakistani-American community today that GEO USA could specifically take up in its broadcasts. The interns expressed a desire to watch authentic, realistic shows using young Pakistani American actors that could express problems and seek to influence the society for the greater good of everyone.
