Pakistani-American delegates display enthusiastic, pro-active role in Boston Convention

WASHINGTON, Jul 31 (APP)- Deputy Chief of the Mission, Pakistan Embassy, Mohammad Sadiq Sunday said he had witnessed "a significantly higher level of political activism shown by delegates of Pakistani American Community" in the three-day Democratic National Convention, in Boston, Massachusetts.

DCM Sadiq was amongst a large number of ambassadors attending the Convention (July 26-29), at the invitation of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), whose mission is "to strengthen and expand democracy worldwide."

On the sidelines of the Convention, Mr. Sadiq said he was able to meet almost all the Pakistani-American delegates to the Convention, and was heartened to see the level of their participation. "There was a high level of visibility, and participation by Pakistani-American delegates, who are second to none in enthusiasm and capabilities."

Talking to APP Sunday, the DCM said, he witnessed the Pakistani-American community enthusiastically participate in the events, and its delegates taking "a pro-active role" in the various sessions and deliberations of the convention.

He said, "a keen learning" of the U.S. political process and the significantly higher level of political activism "would certainly bring dividends to the Pakistani-American community, besides resulting in consolidation of the Pakistan-U.S. relations."

Over the years, he said Pakistani-American community has matured, and it was very much visible from the display of its enviable conduct and leadership qualities.

"I, alongwith several ambassadors was invited by the NDI to attend a number of important events," he said. He also attended a reception for Democratic delegates of South Asian origin, which was attended, among others, by many Senators and Congressmen.

In response to a question, Mr. Sadiq stressed the vital need for Pakistani-Americans to understand the electoral system, and become part of it. Unless a community was fully involved in the politico-electoral system, it was not construed being a part of the society, and, hence could not reap the benefits it offers. "The U.S. system is based on opportunities for all, and promotion of merit."

DCM Sadiq disclosed that he has also been invited to attend the three-day Republican Convention, scheduled for September 1-3, in New York, where again, he will be meeting Pakistani-American delegates to the convention
