RISING LEADER’S MEETINGImages of Rising Leaders Meeting
The meeting gave members of Rising Leaders an opportunity to get to know one another, the Pakistani-American Congressional Staffers, and the organization in an informal setting. Dr. Jonah Blank, former Harvard professor and Senior Adviser on South Asia to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was the guest speaker at the meeting.
Many ideas were exchanged on how to make Rising Leaders a strong nationwide network. It was decided that Rising Leaders should work to build relationships with their Congressmen and coordinate political action in their communities. The creation of the Pakistan Caucus makes this an especially good time for Rising Leaders to exercise leadership skills because they can encourage their community-members to call Congressmen and request that they join the Pakistan Caucus.
Dr. Blank discussed U.S. foreign policy towards Pakistan and prospects for a long-term and broad-based relationship between the U.S. and Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of correcting misperceptions about the relationship among the people of both countries. He was able to relate his comments to his personal experiences living in Lahore and the Rising Leaders found him to be highly engaging and insightful.
Closing comments were given by Congressional Staffer Farhana Khera who stressed that the Pakistani-American community should adopt an active role in domestic and international politics. She was impressed by the large turnout of Pakistani-American women and encouraged them to continue their participation in the American political system.
The meeting was followed by a pizza party where the members had a chance to casually discuss their ideas for Rising Leaders.
